Tasmin Archer
The sewing machine operator whose first single went to number one
Tasmin Archer worked as a clerk in Leeds before “Sleeping Satellite” reached No. 1 and won her a Brit Award, then chose her own path afterward.

Tasmin Archer's path to the charts ran through ordinary jobs. Born in Bradford to Jamaican parents on August 3, 1963, she first worked as a sewing machine operator, studied typing at Bradford College in 1980, and became a clerk at Leeds Magistrates' Court. On the side she sang backing vocals in a group called Dignity, played with bands around Bradford, and helped out at Flexible Response Studios, where she began working with John Hughes and John Beck as “The Archers”.
She signed to EMI in 1990 and released “Sleeping Satellite” in September 1992. It went to No. 1 in the UK and Ireland and reached No. 32 on the Billboard Hot 100. The debut album, Great Expectations, followed that October, reached No. 8 in the UK and went gold within weeks. She gave the royalties from her second single, “In Your Care”, a song about child abuse, to Childline. In 1993 she won a Brit Award as Best British Breakthrough Act and joked that she kept it in the kitchen cupboard to crack nuts and tenderize steak.
The second album, Bloom, arrived in 1996, but “One More Good Night with the Boys” missed the UK Top 40 and the album peaked at No. 95. After musical disagreements with EMI in late 1997 she felt she had been treated as a commodity, was let go, and took a break of two years. When she wanted to write again, writer's block slowed her down.
She worked through it with Hughes and in 2006 released On on her own label, Quiverdisc, preceded by the download-only single “Every Time I Want It (Effect Is Monotony)”. Animator Matt Sandbrook directed two videos for it. She and Hughes also wrote for film and television, including work for EastEnders. In 2025 she returned with A Cauldron of Random Notes and its first single, “Vibration of Life”.
