Niall Horan

The boy band member who picked up a guitar from YouTube

From a Mullingar bedroom and a rejected solo audition to One Direction and four albums of his own, Niall Horan took an unusual route to the front.

Niall Horan

Niall Horan learned the guitar the way many of his generation learned anything: by watching YouTube tutorials. The instrument belonged to his older brother Greg, who got it for his fifteenth birthday, used it once and left it lying around until Niall picked it up. Born in Mullingar, County Westmeath, in 1993, he discovered his voice almost by accident, when an aunt riding in the car with him thought the radio was on.

At sixteen he auditioned for The X Factor in Dublin with a Ne-Yo song. At bootcamp he failed to qualify for the Boys category, and that apparent setback changed everything. On a suggestion from guest judge Nicole Scherzinger, he was placed in a group with four other boys who had also missed out as soloists. With Harry Styles, Liam Payne, Louis Tomlinson and Zayn Malik he formed One Direction, a name that Styles proposed.

They finished as the last act eliminated, behind Rebecca Ferguson and winner Matt Cardle, yet Simon Cowell signed them to Syco anyway. “What Makes You Beautiful” arrived in September 2011 and topped charts in several countries, and the group went on to release five albums and become one of the best-selling boy bands of all time.

When the band declared a hiatus in 2016, Horan signed with Capitol Records as a solo artist. His debut Flicker, led by “This Town” and “Slow Hands”, went to number one in Ireland and the United States. Heartbreak Weather followed in 2020 and reached number one on the UK Albums Chart, and The Show, from 2023, topped the charts in Ireland and the UK. Dinner Party appeared in June 2026.

Away from the microphone, he has coached on The Voice, co-founded a golf management agency and supported causes including autism support and cancer research. The route from a borrowed guitar to stadium stages looks improbable on paper, but it began with the same simple thing as any songwriter's story: a person teaching himself three chords in his room.
