America

The London schoolboys who named their band after a jukebox

Three sons of American airmen met at an English school and, with borrowed guitars and tight harmonies, turned a jukebox into a band name.

In the mid-1960s, Gerry Beckley, Dewey Bunnell and Dan Peek all attended London Central High School at Bushey Hall, because their fathers were stationed with the US Air Force at RAF South Ruislip. They met while playing in two different bands. Peek went to the United States for a failed attempt at college in 1969, and soon after he returned to the UK in 1970 the three began making music together on borrowed acoustic guitars.

Their sound mixed three-part vocal harmony with the style of folk-rock acts such as Crosby, Stills & Nash. They took their name from the Americana jukebox in their local mess hall, and chose it so that nobody would think they were British musicians trying to sound American. After first gigs around London, including the Roundhouse, they were taken on by the producer Ian Samwell and his partner Jeff Dexter, and signed to Kinney Records (UK) in March 1971, assigned to the UK Warner Bros. label.

The self-titled debut was recorded at Trident Studios in London and produced by Samwell and Dexter, and it contained the transatlantic hits “A Horse with No Name” and “I Need You”. “Ventura Highway” came on the second album, Homecoming, in 1972. Then came “Tin Man” and “Lonely People” on Holiday in 1974, and “Sister Golden Hair” on Hearts in 1975, the year the compilation History: America's Greatest Hits went multi-platinum. The group won the Grammy for Best New Artist.

Peek left in 1977 and fortunes declined, though “You Can Do Magic” returned them to the top 10 in 1982. Their last Top 40 hit, “The Border”, reached number 33 in 1983. The light acoustic sound, the close harmonies and the songs that found a home on pop and soft rock stations stayed with them. They were inducted into the Vocal Group Hall of Fame in 2006, and since Beckley retired in 2024, Bunnell has kept touring under the America name.
