John Legend
From uncredited piano player to the EGOT club
John Legend started behind the scenes on other artists’ records and ended up with Grammys, an Oscar, an Emmy and a Tony.

John Legend was born John Roger Stephens, and his early career was spent in the background. He played piano on Lauryn Hill’s “Everything Is Everything” and sang uncredited backing vocals on Jay-Z’s “Encore” and Alicia Keys’s “You Don’t Know My Name”. He became the first artist to sign with Kanye West’s GOOD Music, and his debut album Get Lifted arrived in 2004, preceded by the ballad “Ordinary People”.
The album reached the top ten of the Billboard 200 and went double platinum. At the 48th Annual Grammy Awards he won three of his eight nominations, including Best Male R&B Vocal Performance for “Ordinary People” and Best New Artist. His second album, Once Again, was led by the single “Save Room”, and the third, Evolver, widened his sound; its funk-leaning lead single “Green Light”, featuring André 3000, reached the top thirty of the Hot 100. In 2010 he made Wake Up! with the Philadelphia hip hop band the Roots.
His biggest commercial moment came with Love in the Future, led by “All of Me”. The ballad peaked at No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100, spent 23 consecutive weeks in the top ten and earned diamond certification from the RIAA. Later came Darkness and Light, A Legendary Christmas, Bigger Love, which won a Grammy for Best R&B Album, and Legend in 2022. In all, he has won 12 Grammys.
His reach went beyond records. With Common he won an Academy Award and a Golden Globe for “Glory”, written for the film Selma. He won a Tony for co-producing the play Jitney, played the title role in NBC’s Jesus Christ Superstar, and won an Emmy as a producer of that show, making him in 2018 the first Black male and second youngest person to complete the EGOT. Since 2019 he has coached on The Voice, and since 2025 he has served as Chief Music Officer for Headspace.
