Mary J. Blige

Mary J. Blige and the day R&B and hip hop shared a record

Mary J. Blige grew up in Yonkers housing projects and became the voice who made the mix of R&B and hip hop a mainstream sound.

Mary J. Blige

Mary Jane Blige was born in January 1971 at Fordham Hospital in the Bronx to a nurse, Cora, and a jazz musician, Thomas Blige. She spent her early childhood in Richmond Hill, Georgia, where she sang in a Pentecostal church, and her family later moved back to New York and lived in the Schlobohm Housing Projects in Yonkers. She signed to Uptown Records in 1988, which set in motion one of the most decorated careers in modern R&B.

Her debut album, What's the 411?, appeared in 1992 and is credited with introducing the mix of R&B and hip hop into mainstream pop culture. A remix album followed in 1993 and became the first album by a singer to have a rapper on every song, popularizing rap as a featuring act. Both What's the 411? and her 1994 album My Life were ranked on Rolling Stone's list of the 500 greatest albums. Over the years she has released 15 studio albums, and four of them, Share My World, Love & Live, The Breakthrough and Growing Pains, topped the Billboard 200.

The songs are as familiar as the albums: “Real Love”, “You Remind Me”, “I'm Goin' Down”, “Not Gon' Cry”, “Everything”, “No More Drama”, “Be Without You”, “One” with U2, “Just Fine” and the Hot 100 number one “Family Affair”. In 2017 Billboard named “Be Without You” the most successful R&B/hip-hop song of all time, after it spent a then-record 15 weeks at the top of the Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs chart.

She also became an actress. For her supporting role as Florence Jackson in Mudbound she received two Academy Award nominations, one for acting and one for the film's song “Mighty River”, making her the first person nominated for acting and songwriting in the same year. Her accolades include nine Grammy Awards and a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame in 2018, and in 2024 she was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.
